BenchReady — External drive missing: record its state before writing to it Windows 11 with an external storage device that is absent from File Explorer. This is an observation and handoff guide, not a data-recovery procedure. Outside this guide: Do not apply new-disk initialization instructions to a disk whose contents you want to recover. Server dynamic-disk and RAID repair procedures are outside this guide. STOP: If files matter, cancel prompts to initialize or format. Do not create a volume on unallocated space. Stop for physical damage, unusual sounds or repeated disconnections and seek a qualified data-recovery/service assessment. PREPARE [ ] Whether the drive contains files you need [ ] A backup status you can verify [ ] Authorization to inspect Disk Management on the PC CHECKS 1. Establish the data priority Before troubleshooting, decide whether the disk is empty, backed up, or holds the only known copy. Leave uncertain contents marked unknown. 2. Inspect without changing the disk Open Disk Management from the Start button’s context menu. Identify the external disk carefully by its displayed size and connection; inspect only, and cancel any initialization prompt. 3. Record the displayed state Note whether the disk is absent, Offline, Not Initialized, RAW, Unallocated, or has a Healthy volume. Record whether a drive letter exists. Avoid making changes while the intended disk or data status is uncertain. 4. Choose the appropriate handoff A missing letter on a healthy volume, a damaged file system and an undetected device are different situations. Provide the observed state and backup status to support. If recovery is needed, preserve the disk rather than following new-disk setup steps. OBSERVATIONS Contents priority: Not checked Choices: Not checked / Wanted files; only known copy / Wanted files; backup verified / Known empty drive / Contents unknown Visible in Disk Management: Not checked Choices: Not checked / Yes / No / Unable to inspect Displayed state: Not checked Choices: Not checked / Healthy volume / Offline / Not Initialized / RAW / Unallocated / Other or uncertain Drive letter: Not checked Choices: Not checked / Present / Missing / Not applicable Physical concern: Not checked Choices: Not checked / None observed / Damage or unusual sounds / Repeated disconnections Next step: Not checked Choices: Not checked / Ask about drive letter / Pause for data recovery / Ask about device detection NEXT STEPS Healthy volume with no drive letter: Ask for the drive-letter route after confirming the intended volume. Keep the existing file system and contents intact. RAW, Unallocated or Not Initialized with wanted files: Pause before any operation that writes new storage structures. Request data-recovery advice with the state you recorded. No disk is visible: The connection/device path is unresolved. A missing listing is not proof the disk is empty or safe to initialize.
