Liquid detection response

Handle a Lightning liquid alert without forcing a wet charging connection.

Confirm the exact model

Select a model confirmation to begin the checks. The full preparation guide is below.

Preparation guide

  1. Unplug both ends of the cable. Do not use the emergency charging override for routine troubleshooting.

  2. With the connector pointing down, gently tap the phone against your hand. Leave it in a dry place with airflow. Use no heat, compressed air, rice or inserted objects.

  3. Wait at least 30 minutes before checking with a dry Lightning cable. If the alert returns, allow further drying; Apple says full drying can take up to 24 hours.

  4. If the phone is dry and the warning recurs only with one accessory, set that accessory aside. If it recurs with an Apple cable or accessory, arrange service.

Check the result

  • Save the drying and accessory observations. Resume wired use only when the connector and cable are dry.
  • A persistent alert with a dry Apple cable needs Apple service. Do not diagnose a replaceable port from the alert alone.

Stop conditions

  • Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
