Confirm the exact model

Select a model confirmation to begin the checks. The full preparation guide is below.

Preparation guide

  1. Inspect the Lightning cable and adapter for fraying, bent contacts or damage. Set damaged accessories aside; do not repair the adapter.

  2. Use a firm direct connection to a working wall outlet. Inspect the Lightning opening visually. Do not insert a tool or force the connector; ask for help if debris cannot be removed safely.

  3. Allow 30 minutes of charging. If it will not turn on, quickly press volume up, quickly press volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

  4. Allow another 30 minutes of charging. Note whether the battery indicator appeared and whether a different undamaged cable made a difference.

Check the result

  • Record the working cable/outlet combination. Back up once the phone is available; recurrence needs follow-up.
  • No charging response after these checks warrants Apple service; it does not identify the battery as the cause.

Stop conditions

  • Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
