Blank startup screen preparation

Record whether the M1 Air reaches startup options before seeking data-safe support.

Preparation guide

  1. Distinguish a Mac that seems powered on with a blank screen from one with no power response. Record what you can observe without opening it.

  2. Apple’s blank-screen guidance allows holding the power button up to 10 seconds to turn off, then turning on again. Unsaved work may be lost; use this only when normal shutdown is unavailable.

  3. On an M1 Mac, hold power to look for startup Options. Note whether Options appear. Do not erase disks, reinstall, revive or restore firmware in this preparation task.

  4. If Options or diagnostics can be reached, retain that observation and any diagnostic code privately. If the blank screen persists, request support while explicitly raising your backup/data situation.

Check the result

  • Save that startup Options are reachable and bring your data-preservation needs to Apple support. A visible Options screen is not a repair.
  • A persistent blank screen needs Apple service guidance. Do not default to firmware restore or disk erasure.

Stop conditions

  • Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
