USB-C power and battery checks

Separate charging hardware, load and battery settings on the M1 Air.

Confirm the exact model

Select a model confirmation to begin the checks. The full preparation guide is below.

Preparation guide

  1. Inspect cable, port and power adapter for visible damage. If anything is damaged, stop using it. Try an undamaged charging-capable cable, not a data-only cable.

  2. Connect directly to the Mac and a working outlet. The original M1 Air specification lists a 30 W USB-C adapter; use a compatible recommended supply rather than assuming any USB source can charge under load.

  3. Review the battery menu and Battery settings. A high workload or an intentional battery health pause can cause Not Charging without identifying a defective battery.

  4. Save work, restart this Apple silicon Mac, and retest with lighter workload in a ventilated location. Do not perform Intel SMC key combinations on the M1.

Check the result

  • Save the observed charging behavior and workload. If it recurs, retain the comparison for Apple support.
  • Persistent unexplained charging trouble needs Apple support. Do not open the adapter or interpret this as permission to replace a battery.

Stop conditions

  • Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
