Preparation guide

  1. Shut down and disconnect peripherals except allowed keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet if applicable, and power. Use a hard, flat ventilated surface.

  2. Press and hold the power/Touch ID button until startup options appear; release when you see Options.

  3. Hold Command-D until the Mac restarts into diagnostics. Follow the displayed instructions; available tests vary with macOS.

  4. Keep reference codes privately and include them when requesting service. A no-issue result does not rule out intermittent faults.

Check the result

Stop conditions

  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
