Run the Apple silicon diagnostic entry and preserve its result for service.
Native external display checks
Check the M1 Air’s native display limit and direct video connection.
Planning estimate; excludes charging, cooling, backups and service. Not a measured repair time.
Confirm the exact model
Select a model confirmation to begin the checks. The full preparation guide is below.
Preparation guide
Confirm the Mac is the M1 2020 Air. Apple specifies one native external display; a second native display failing is not evidence of a broken port.

Check external display power, input selection and video cable seating. The cable/adapter must support the display signal; charging support alone is insufficient.

Disconnect a dock and connect the single display directly to a Mac port. If using closed-lid mode, confirm power and external input devices per Apple’s guidance.

In Displays settings, hold Option to reveal Detect Displays if available. Compare after sleep/wake or a normal restart; retain whether the built-in screen remained usable.

Check the result
- Save the working connection. Multiple displays through third-party software are outside this native-display task.
- If a single supported direct display stays dark, contact Apple and the display vendor with cable and input observations.
Stop conditions
- Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
- Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
- Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
