Built-in keyboard input checks

Separate accessibility and input-source settings from repeatable key failure.

Confirm the exact model

Preparation guide

  1. Test a few letters in a local text document. Record whether all keys fail or only specific keys; do not enter passwords as a test.

  2. Check the selected keyboard input source. An unexpected symbol may reflect the layout rather than hardware failure.

  3. Review Accessibility keyboard settings for Slow Keys and pointer-control settings for Mouse Keys, using the installed macOS labels. Preserve your previous choices before changing a setting.

  4. Retest the same keys. Remember Caps Lock and eject-style keys can have deliberate delay; persistent missing letters need support, not prying off keycaps.

Check the result

  • Save which setting explained the input. Restore accessibility choices you still need.
  • Persistent missing or unexpected keys require Apple support, especially after damage. Do not remove keycaps in this task.

Stop conditions

  • Stop using and charging a swollen or damaged battery. Do not open, compress, puncture, or attempt battery removal. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  • Disconnect a damaged accessory if it is safe to do so. Do not open a mains power adapter.
  • Save accessible data before restarting. Do not reset, erase, flash firmware, bypass a lock, or open the enclosure in this task.
